I have to admit that this one threw me for a loop. And if it weren’t for the fact that the source was Gallup, a long-time trusted research entity, I would be laughing it off as some outlier push-poll.
But it is Gallup. And here’s what threw me, via Melissa O’Rourke’s article for dailycaller.com:
An increasingly large share of Democrats view socialism more favorably than capitalism, a troubling new Gallup poll shows.
Only 42% of Democrats said they have a positive view of capitalism, compared to 66% who asserted a positive view of socialism, Gallup found. As Democrats seek to redefine their party after the devastating 2024 defeat, the finding indicates the base is increasingly open to the socialist policy ideas promoted by party leaders.
By contrast, 74% of Republicans reported a favorable view of capitalism, with only 14% viewing socialism favorably, according to the survey conducted between Aug. 1 and 20 among 1,094 U.S. adults.
Overall, 54% of Americans reported a positive view of capitalism, down from 60% in 2021 and marking the lowest level since Gallup began tracking the question in 2010. Favorable views of socialism increased slightly, from 36% to 39%, during the same period.
Wow.
I, along with a good many others, have been writing about the Democrat Party’s transition to the hard-left. But I didn’t expect to see the extent to which it seems to have occurred among the Democrats’ general population.
Even if we remember that political polling often is inaccurate/that it may well be the Gallup data are exaggerated, there are limits to how exaggerated it could be. Suppose, for the sake of discussion, that Democrat acceptance of socialism is overstated by 10% (which, given that this is Gallup, I very seriously doubt). It would still mean that a majority of Democrats are OK with socialism.
As Shrek said, when he found out that Fiona was an ogre just like he was…”Well, that explains a lot”. It explains a lot about how the Democrat Party has moved to the precipice it currently is on.
Now explain to me how come so much of our mainstream media, unintentionally or intentionally (my bet is on door #2) keep ignoring it. Are they on board with the “socialism is good, capitalism is bad” narrative too?
You tell me.
