Chris Van Hollen, a Senator from Maryland, has always been a partisan Democrat. No surprise there.
But only now do I realize that he had the capacity, and willingness, to make an absolute fool of himself. Maybe establish himself as the dumbest politician in the USA.
How did he do this? By traveling to El Salvador to try and retrieve kilmar abrego garcia, the “Maryland dad” that Democrats (not just Van Hollen) have decided to make their cause celebre of the week.
abrego garcia is an illegal alien, an MS-13 gang member and a multiple-time wife beater who was inadvertently sent to El Salvador – his home country, it should be noted – and is now being held in its maximum security jail.
Knowing this, most people, I am certain, would say “goodbye and good riddance”.
But not Van Hollen. With as many cameras and microphones as possible recording him (he apparently thinks this makes him a super-star), he informed us that the Trump administration “abducted” abrego garcia, and sent this paradigm of love, truth, honesty and virtue to El Salvador unjustly.
The fact that abrego garcia is an illegal alien in the US, an MS-13 gang banger and a wife beater? Irrelevant ‘n’ immaterial.
So off to El Salvador Van Hollen went. Hoping, no doubt, for a triumphant return with abrego garcia that a fawning media would hail as a brilliant masterstroke by a highly talented Senator.
Uh….except….
…the actual result of this trip was that Van Hollen was told he could not see abrego garcia, let alone bring him back to the United States.
In other words, Van Hollen went to El Salvador to retrieve an undesirable illegal alien. But El Salvador, in essence, told him that HE was an undesirable, and to high-tail it back to the USA empty handed. The bum’s rush if there ever was one.
In one of his press conferences before leaving, Van Hollen happily told the assembled media that if he did not succeed in retrieving abrego garcia, other senators would follow his lead and go to El Salvador to petition for his return as well.
But now that El Salvador has given Van Hollen got the bum’s rush, and made him look like a complete fool in the process, I somehow doubt there is going to be any stampede of other Democrats willing to do the same.
On the other hand, this is the party of AOC, Bernie Sanders and jasmine crockett, isn’t it? So all bets are off.
