Media, today, are talking a great deal about the two Florida House seats that were retained by Republicans – both in landslide votes – and Wisconsin’s Supreme Court judicial race, in which the favored Democrat won, also in a landslide. As they should.
But there was also a referendum in Wisconsin that, at least so far, seems to be getting far less attention than it should: whether requiring a photo ID to vote should be part of the state’s constitution – photo ID’s being something that most Republicans in congress strongly favor and most Democrats in congress strongly oppose.
The results of that vote? 63% to 37% in favor of the photo ID requirement.
And, given the huge amount of support shown for voter ID in every poll I have ever seen, including a majority of Democrat voters – and a majority of Black voters, despite Democrat claims that voter IDs suppress the Black vote – my guess is that, if this referendum were on the ballot in every state, it would pass 50 times out of 50.
That, to me, is major news. It is a clear, unequivocal statement that voters want clean elections, without the obvious opportunities for cheating that exist without a ID requirement in place.
So will this be getting major-story treatment?
See if you can find it on the networks tonight. And if you don’t, think long and hard about what that tells you.
