President Trump – somewhat quixotically, since Democrats across the country are going to mount legal challenges against it – has signed an executive order which, among other things, requires proof of citizenship to be able to vote.
From Aly Swenson and Christina A. Cassidy’s article at the (once neutral, now partisan-Democrat) Associated Press:
President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a sweeping executive action to overhaul elections in the U.S., including requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and demanding that all ballots be received by Election Day.
The order says the U.S. has failed “to enforce basic and necessary election protections” and c.alls on states to work with federal agencies to share voter lists and prosecute election crimes. It threatens to pull federal funding from states where election officials don’t comply.
If Swenson and Cassidy had stopped there, it would be neutral journalism. But this is today’s AP, so the next paragraph is…
The move, which is likely to face swift challenges because states have broad authority to set their own election rules, is consistent with Trump’s long history of railing against election processes. He often claims elections are being rigged, even before the results are known, and has waged battles against certain voting methods since he lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden and falsely blamed it on widespread fraud.
Well, there you go. A demand that voters demonstrate they are qualified to vote before doing so – which just about every democracy in the world (other than Australia and New Zealand) requires, by the way – is not just a generic attempt to make voting more accurate, it is an indulgence from an obsessed man who makes false claims about voter fraud (FYI: most of the court dismissals of Trump’s accusations were due to lack of standing or insufficient evidence, NOT a finding that fraud didn’t exist).
Let me ask you something: do YOU want voters to provide some form of proof they are legally able to do so?
If you answer yes, you are certainly in the majority, since every poll I’ve ever seen shows most voters do.
And – this is particularly important, since Democrats claim such initiatives are attempts to suppress the Black vote – most Black voters want voter ID as well (don’t expect the AP to remind you of this)
Want some evidence? Well, the most recent polling I’ve seen, conducted by Gallup in October of last year, shows that:
-84% of all respondents endorse a photo ID requirement to vote;
-66% – that’s about 2/3 – of all Democrats support a proof of citizenship requirement (96% of Republicans do);
-76% of people of color – that’s over 3/4 – support a proof of citizenship requirement
Does that look like people don’t want voter ID requirements? Does that look like Black people consider voter ID a way to suppress their vote?
So if voter ID and proof of citizenship are both massively supported, including a large majority of Democrats – why would Democrat politicians be so admantly against these requirements?
Could it possibly be that they want to make voter fraud easier to accomplish? If not, what other reason is there (and DON’T tell me about suppression of the Black vote; we’ve already tossed that one).
But now we have President Trump’s executive order out there. Which, as shown above, clearly reflects the will of the people.
Let’s see how many Democrats, in how many ways, attempt to tell you why this executive order is terrible, unfair, racist, etc……and how many media venues – probably including the AP – try to figure out a way to back them up on it.
