THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

Today’s quote comes to us from an unlikely source, given what the quote actually is.  It was made by former NBC Meet The Press host Chuck Todd.

Mr. Todd feels that the Democrat leaders – Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries – are flummoxed by the impossible situation of trying to simultaneously deal with the “woke” hard-leftists who seem to have taken over the party, and more moderate incumbents who not only disagree with their hard-left counterparts, but fear – with good reason – that the hard-left positions/demands will jeopardize them in upcoming elections.

His exact words:

“Jefferies and Schumer acting paralyzed because they have two different constituencies. They have ones who are worried about a left wing tea party, and they should be worried about that because I do think this anger inside the base is real. Then you have others who are like, hey, I won, and Trump carried my state. So I’ve got to do this. So I think that’s why Jeffries and Schumer come across as paralyzed because they’re trying to placate a coalition party that doesn’t know which direction to go to.

“They should be having a loud argument the way Bill Clinton and Jesse Jackson did in 1989 and 1990 after a thrashing in 1988 where Republicans won.  And the problem is, the Democrats right now are afraid of having a public debate because they don’t want to help out Trump, but I do think it’s I do think it’s stifling their ability to figure out what to do next.”

I certainly agree that the Democrat Party is now comprised of two dramatically different mindsets, neither of which like or respect the other.  And, though I’m not sure a “loud argument” strategy is the way to “figure out what to do next”, I definitely agree that they have to do something, even if it might be painful in the short run…and that they better do it fast, since every day they hold off brings them closer to the mid-term elections.

I therefore award Chuck Todd Quote Of The Day honors for his candid assessment of what may be an insoluble problem; how to get “woke” hard leftists and moderates to peacefully coexist within one political party.
