Donald Trump has been President for one week. And in that time he has signed massive numbers of “executive orders”, while making demands of people, organizations and other countries that would be more suitable for a Dictator than for a United States President, who (at least on paper) is subject to the legal restraints of, among other things, the other two co-equal branches of government.
Are you comfortable with this? I know I’m not.
But I’ll tell you something else I’m not comfortable with. I’m not comfortable with the fact that, albeit to a far greater extent, Trump is doing exactly the kinds of things Joe Biden (or, more exactly, his puppeteers) did for the past four years.
Donald Trump did not invent the concept of what amounts to an “imperial presidency”. Nor did Biden. But Biden – through his hard-left masters, let’s never forget – pushed it significantly further than it had ever been pushed before.
Remember his first week as President? Remember the end of domestic drilling? Remember his closing of the keystone pipeline? Remember the others?
In case your memory is a little fuzzy about Biden’s use of executive orders, here’s a list of 99 of them. And that’s before we talk about the massive, unprecedented (until Trump) number of pardons, including never before seen “pre-emptive” pardons, given to, among others, his immediate family members.
Now, in the great scheme of “what goes around comes around”, Trump has picked up from where Biden/his puppeteers left off.
So, yes, I am uncomfortable – very uncomfortable – with how Trump is approaching his second term in the White House. And I am hoping there is some way, via legal remedy, of stopping this kind of presidency from ever occurring again.
But I also remember that it was Biden-by-committee which set the market for this incarnation of the imperial presidency.
How I wish more of our mainstream media did the same. But I have no expectation that will happen any time soon.
