Today’s quote comes to us from a “Fillmore United Alliance” (San Francisco) activist named Daniel Landry.
Mr. Landry, it seems, is terribly upset that a Safeway supermarket in the Filmore section of San Francisco – the last full-sized supermarket in the neighborhood – is closing. He is demanding that it stay open. His exact words:
“We’re not playing. We’re demanding. We’re not requesting. We’re demanding. We’re not urging you. We’re demanding you. And we want all the new (city) Supervisors to understand, this can be a beautiful relationship or a sour relationship.”

At this point you might be wondering why this Safeway – the one and only supermarket in an entire neighborhood – would proactively give up its monopoly status.
The reason? Because the neighborhood’s residents are stealing it blind. One estimate I read shows that this Safeway is losing (you better be sitting down for this) $200,000 a month to the amount of theft there.
The store was originally set to close last March, but Mayor London Breed convinced Safeway to stay on and lose its shirt for almost another year.
But that is of no concern to Daniel Landry. He is not demanding that security be implemented to prevent theft. He is not demanding that the laws be changed so that the thieves be punished and jailed – which might inhibit at least some of the theft.
No, Landry is demanding that Safeway stay open and lose money while the thieves run free.
I award Daniel Landry Quote Of The Day honors, for providing another of the seemingly countless reasons that San Francisco (and it is far from the only place in California) has turned from a world-class tourist destination to a toilet facility.
Hey, maybe Gavin Newsom, a former Mayor of San Francisco, can jump in to save the town. I mean, he’s doing such a bang-up job as Governo…..oh, wait a minute. Never mind.
