One of the first orders of business in the new, Republican-controlled congress, was consideration of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. This act would make it a violation of federal law if schools permit biological males to compete in women’s sports.
It is a measure of how far afield we have gone that something as rudimentary, as grounded in basic common-sense, as this would require legislation. But in today’s United States it is a necessity.
So how did the vote go? It passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 218 to 206.
206 against????
That’s right, 206 congresspeople voted that it was just fine with them if males compete in female athletics.
And how did the vote go by party? Wait, I’ll give you a few minutes to think it over and guess…
…on second thought I doubt you need the few minutes…or even a few seconds. Every Republican voted in favor of this legislation. But, with a total of four exceptions – two voting with the Republicans and two non-voting – every Democrat voted against.
Do you have, are related to someone who has, or know someone who has a daughter in school? One that might compete in physical athletics? If so, you tell me what does and doesn’t make sense here. What is and isn’t fair here.
Do you want young women to play volleyball and be spiked by a male who decided, biology notwithstanding, that he was a woman? Do you want him on the girls’ wrestling team? To be running track and field?
Every poll I have ever read, including the most recent one, released just this week, shows a vast majority of people are against males competing in female sport – including almost all Republicans and a majority of Democrats as well. But this is how House Democrats voted anyway.
This legislation will now go to the Senate. And if Democrats have even a scintilla of common sense they will think twice before acting as amazingly stupidly as their counterparts in the House…unless, of course, they fear backlash from the “woke” crowd that, more and more, has taken over their party than they do about anyone or anything else.
My bet? Most will vote in the same amazingly stupid way. Maybe enough of them to filibuster it and prevent a full senate vote.
I hope that I’m wrong.
