DID HILLARY CLINTON REALLY SAY THAT?

Ken Berwitz

As pointed out in the previous blog, I did not watch last night\’s Democrat presidential debate.

But, in reading various web sites, the most memorable takeaway may well be Hillary Clinton\’s remarkable answer, after she was characterized by Bernie Sanders as the candidate of Wall Street:

“You know, not only doI have hundreds of thousands of donors, most of them small, and i\’m very proudthe fact that for the first time, a majority of my donors are women, 60percent. ( cheers and applause ) So I- I represented New York, and Irepresented New York on 9/11,when we were attacked. Where were we attacked? We were attacked in downtown Manhattan where Wall Street is. I did spend awhole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild…

SAY WHAT?

Can Hillary Clinton really be telling us – along with her standing applause line that she is a woman\’s candidate (but watch her wail with indignation if an opponent dares to say anything associated with her gender) – that Wall Street supports her because she happened to be the Senator from New York when the 9/11 attack occurred?  That it is not because she and Hubby Bubba are in bed with Wall Street fatcats, but because she was a Senator on 9/11?

That has all the credibilty of a military communique from Baghdad Bob.

And don\’t you love her throwaway line that she spent “a whole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild”?

What time?  What effort?  What did she do?  What does that mean?

Hillary Clinton spent 8 useless years in the United States senate, during which time she did not put forth, and see to enactment, any major bill of any kind on any subject at all, let alone the rebuilding of lower Manhattan after 9/11.

To the Hillary lovers of this country (and they certainly exist), none of this will make any difference.  She\’s HILLARY, she\’s A WOMAN, she\’s BILL”S HUSBAND, so she must be rewarded with four, maybe eight, years in the Oval office.
But to some of us – a lot of us, I hope – actually accomplishing something is a requisite for sitting behind the Oval Office desk.

And, in that regard, she is an empty pants suit.
