The Alfred E. Smith Dinner was held last night. It is an event where politicians join with prominent Catholic leaders to drop the serious politics for a few hours and poke good natured fun at each other.
As a matter of course, every presidential candidate attends this dinner. The last time one of them declined was in 1984, when Democrat Walter Mondale didn’t show up…and then lost 49 out of 50 states to Ronald Reagan, winning only his home state of Minnesota – by less than 4,000 votes.
That, I would think, is a pretty good argument for Kamala Harris to show up this year. But she didn’t.
Her non-attendance would have been bad enough, because it left Republican candidate Donald Trump a clear field to jokingly/sarcastically unload on her without any blowback.
But, apparently, that wasn’t a bad enough outcome for Harris. She – or, more probably, the handlers who are running this disastrous campaign- decided to compensate for her non-attendance by sending over a four minute “comedic” video featuring Harris and a Saturday Night Live character with the very Catholic-sounding name “Mary Katharine Gallagher”.
And what did this character do?
Well, she compared the Alfred E. Smith Dinner to The Last Supper – a “joke” sure to offend just about any practicing Catholic.
Then she put her hands in each of her armpits and smelled them – which not only was unfunny, it was disgusting.
Then she made a joke of the Ten Commandments.
And then she said the night’s fact-checker would be Jesus.
And, during this “could it possibly be more offensive” routine, there was Kamala Harris smiling along and tossing out a few supposedly funny return lines of her own…like telling the unfunny SNL character that criticizing Catholics at this dinner would be “like criticizing Detroit in Detroit”. (I’ll wait for you to stop belly-laughing at how funny that was. I doubt it will be a long wait.)

Personally, I do not see how this comes across as funny. Or cute. Or even minimally acceptable.
I’m left wondering who came up the idea? Maybe a mole from the Trump-2024 campaign staff?
I’m also left wondering how in the world it could help Kamala Harris get votes from anyone – least of all Catholics, who comprise about 20% of the total U.S. population and are an imperative voting bloc in several swing states.
I’ll end by again asking the question in my blog title: Is Kamala Harris trying to lose this election?
If so, then she should be very happy today. Because unbelievably stupid, counterproductive excrement like this is certainly going to help the “lose this election” effort along.
