Today’s quote comes to us from Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC). It concerns Donald Trump’s insatiable penchant for making personal attacks on his political opponents – even when he has a clear, convincing story to tell without the insults and name-calling – and how it is a mistake to do so in his campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris.
On yesterday’s edition of Fox News Sunday, Senator Graham said this:
“So here’s what I would say to President Trump. The problem I have with Kamala Harris is not her heritage it is her judgment. She has been wrong about everything. When she tried to explain what she would do about inflation with an upcoming recession it made no sense. She has been in the witness protection program. No one we’ll ask her a hard question.
“Every day we’re talking about her heritage and not her terrible, dangerous liberal record throughout her entire political life is a good day for her and a bad day for us. So I would encourage President Trump to prosecute the case against Kamala Harris’s bad judgment.”
Donald Trump can spend his campaign attacking Kamala Harris on exactly that – the fact that she is a hard leftist who is on record – and, even more importantly for Trump’ campaign, on video – making comments/expressing opinions that alienate just about everyone but the hard left, and now trying, with the help of much of our media, to backtrack on them.
Instead, Trump is going after her with name calling and bullying – exactly what he would have to do if he didn’t have those stated positions and videos to show the voters. Exactly what he would have to do if he had nothing other than the bullying to go after her with.
This may wow ’em at those rallies in stadiums filled with people who will vote for Trump no matter what. But it is a turn-off to a ton of other people…and justifiably so.
If Trump thinks he can win this election by personally insulting his opponent – who is both a woman and a minority, which is certain to exacerbate the negative effect his personal insults have – instead of going after her on policy, he’s going to be a two-time presidential loser, spending the rest of his days, no doubt, whining about how the election was stolen from him…
…and we’re going to be stuck with a vacuous flyweight hard-left liar in the White House.
I award Lindsey Graham Quote Of The Day honors for understanding this reality, and saying it in a more diplomatic way than I have.
I wonder if Trump has the capacity to listen, absorb, and learn from Senator Graham’s wise words.
Based on experience, the answer is probably no.
