Today’s quote comes to us from Hollywood superstar Jeffrey Katzenberg, a producer, co-founder/CEO of DreamWorks, and former chairperson of the Walt Disney Company.
Katzenberg, one of the organizers of Joe Biden’s mega-fundraising event at Radio City Music Hall last night, had this to say about it:
“The numbers don’t lie: today’s event is a massive show of force and a true reflection of the momentum to re-elect the Biden-Harris ticket.”
Interesting observation.
So tell us, Jeff: what qualifies as momentum? Did this event draw tons of just plain folks? Were they interested in/moved by what the politicians had to say, or was anything else drawing them in?
Uh…I didn’t hear you. That quote didn’t mention any of it. So I did some checking, and here, via Oli Coleman and Victor Nava’s article for the New York Post, is what I found:
After a musical number by Grammy Award-winning artist Lizzo, and a bit with fashion designer Michael Kors, the night’s host, actress Mindy Kaling, took the stage and poked fun at the well-heeled donors in attendance.
“This is such a big night,” Kaling said. “It is such an honor to be in this room with so many rich people.”
“People are paying up to $500,000 to be here tonight,” she added. “For that kind of money at an RNC fundraiser, you get to be secretary of state.”
Musical acts Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo and Lea Michele also performed at the event.
Tickets for the affair ranged from $250 to $500,000, according to Reuters, and the most generous donors received a photo op with the three presidents — snapped by Annie Leibovitz — and invitations to separate receptions with Biden, Obama and Clinton.
Wait a minute. Y’mean those people didn’t just show up to see and hear Joe Biden and a bunch of his political allies talk about their political views? They were enticed by a pile of major entertainment?
And those people who came; y’mean they were not just plain neighborhood folks? It sure doesn’t seem that way, given that the cheapest seat in the house was the cost of a top-rated Broadway musical, and some of the people there paid a quarter of a million dollars or more to see and be seen?
Tell me, Jeff, what do you think people who spend that much money for a political event expect to get in return for their $$$$$? Anything at all, d’ya suppose? Like maybe some help with a political or legal situation, maybe a favorable ruling on a regulation or two?
I award Jeff Katzenberg Quote Of The Day honors for showing us that he is either an obtuse, unthinking clown who does not see what is in front of his eyes…
…or that he is none of those things, does see what is in front of his eyes, and is therefore expelling a pile of excrement that would make an oversized bull proud of himself.
Your call.
