UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI – COLUMBIA: SEEKING OUT RACISM

Ken Berwitz

Did you know that the University of Missouri\’s Columbia campus is a seething hotbed of racism?

Neither did I.  But, based on two articles in the school\’s newspaper, apparently some students have convinced themselves that it is.

Let me start by enumerating the entire range of racism described in the first article, published a week and a half ago, and the subsequent article, published on Thursday.

From the first article, published September 14th:

Payton Head said the first time he was ever called the “N-word” was behind a fraternity house in Greektown when he was walking a friend home from campus at night last spring.

“I\’d had experience with racism before, like microaggressions, but that was the first time I\’d experienced in-your-face racism,” Head, now a senior and president of the Missouri Students Association, said.

He had considered leaving MU but joined MSA instead.

Then on  Friday night, Head said he was walking down Hitt Street when a pickup passed him and a passenger repeatedly shouted racial slurs at him.

“Some guys in the back of a pickup just started yelling the \’N-word\’ at me,” Head said Monday.

And from the subsequent article, published September 24th:

About 100 students gatheredThursday afternoon at MU for a “Racism Lives Here” rallyin Speakers Circle. Many held signs with sayings such as “I am morethan my skin color” and “Mizzou is racist,” in an attempt to spark MU\’sadministration to action.

“How long didwe have to wait for the chancellor to respond?” Walker asked the crowd.

“Six days,” someone shouted back.

Walker pulledout the letter that Chancellor R. BowenLoftin had issued in response to the disclosure by Head andread parts of it aloud. Afterwards, she held it up in the air and said it didnot show that the administration was actively doing anything to help its blackstudents.

“I am tired ofthis institution condoning that we cannot walk while black on campus,” Walkersaid.

For the next 30minutes, Walker discussed her belief that the administration inadequatelyaddressed racism. She referenced the cotton balls scattered on MU\’s Black Culture Center in 2010.

“Racism liveshere,” Walker said. “Not in Ferguson. Not in Baltimore. Not in South Carolina.Here. Right here.”

Waiting for more?  Well, other than general “I don\’t feel comfortable here” and “you White people don\’t understand” comments – nothing specific – there isn\’t any.

All we have, therefore, is an incident where unidentified people screamed a slur from a pickup truck – no certainty they even were students at the school – and there was a stupid, racist-stereotype stunt pulled on campus 5 years ago.

Does this suggest the campus is teeming with racism?  Or does it look like the kind of offensive garbage that any other group – including Jews, Italians, short people, overweight people, etc. etc. etc., and even (gasp!) White people, might experience in being singled out for who they are?  Because that sure is what it looks like to me.

And since, according to the latest data, there are over 2,500 Black students there, the fact that just 100 showed up for this rally pretty convincingly demonstrates that most Black students agree with me.

Why, then, is the student newspaper giving so much attention to a barely attended rally called to make demands over virtually nothing?

Well, maybe this will help.  Here, from the first article, is the newspaper\’s description of joanne chesimard, aka assata shakur:

Administrators andspectators watched from the second floor, as the crowd stood in the Jesse Halllobby. Butler yelled out a well-known passage from black activist Assata Shakur\’s autobiography to the crowd, and theyshouted it back in response:

“It is our duty tofight for our freedom.”

“It is our dutyto win.”

“We must loveeach other and support each other.”

“We have nothingto lose but our chains.”

Shakur was a member ofthe former Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army and wasimprisoned several times in the 1970s before escaping to Cuba.

Imprisoned several times and escaped?  That\’s it?

FYI:  joanne chesimard was a convicted murderer who left a trail of dead cops – White and Black both – along with assorted other felonies.

But these geniuses were celebrating her; quoting from her.  So what chesimard actually did wasn\’t going to be mentioned.  Can\’t damage the narrative, can we?

Based on what I\’ve read in these articles, I would like to end by extending my condolences to the parents of University of Missouri-Columbia students….for paying tuition there.
