THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

Today’s quote comes from someone who, it seems evident, is poised to be a rich source for this series: Chicago’s Mayor, Brandon Johnson.

Here is a particularly ripe nugget offered by Mayor Brandon, while blaming right wing Republicans for the mess Chicago is in:

“What we’ve seen is a very raggedy form of right-wing extremism. Everyone knows that the right-wing extremism in this country has targeted democratically run cities and quite frankly and they have been quite intentional about going after democratically ran cities that are led by people of color.”

“It’s the same Republican right-wing extremism that stormed the capital, its the same right wing extremism that refuses to accept the results of the civil war. Its raggedy its disrespectful, its mean spirited.”

“They’re still mad that a Black man is free in this country.”

A few points of order:

-Right wing extremism is a hard one to pin the downfall of Chicago on…since Brandon Johnson is a Democrat, so was the Mayor he replaced, and the City Council – 50 members – is comprised of 47 Democrats and three independents, not even one Republican.  In fact, the last Republican Mayor of Chicago left office in 1931; 92 years ago;

-“Refuses to accept the results of the Civil War”?????? “They’re still mad that a Black man is free in this country??????.“ That is an amazing dose of ignorance.  In fact, the Republican Party was formed in 1954 as an anti-slavery alternative to the Democrat Party – the party which not only supported slavery but was front and center of the post-civil war jim crow laws;

-Regarding Black cities that are led by people of color, Johnson just might want to reference Mayor Eric Johnson of Dallas, who is every bit as Black as Johnson is…and just changed parties from Democrat to Republican because he supports strong law enforcement and lower taxes.

I award Mayor Brandon Johnson Quote Of The Day “honors”, for proving that the disgusting political strategy of tossing out racism as a panacea for everything and anything, even when it has zero validity, is alive, well, and that he is perfectly happy to use it.

I’ll end with my congratulations to the voters of Chicago for putting Brandon Johnson in office.  You wanted him, and you got him.  Enjoy the ride.
