THE UN VIEW OF ISRAEL

With 22 Arab countries, 49 Muslim-majority countries, and those countries controlling most of the world’s oil supply, it is not hard to figure out why the United Nations isn’t exactly support-central for Israel.

But does it have to go this far in assuring those countries (and all the other ones) what a despised pariah Israel is seen as?

Case in point:  today’s commentary on Israel by UN Secretary-General antónio guterres.

Speaking of the October 7 atrocity committed by hamas, and Israel’s subsequent (continuing) response to it, guterres first said this:

“The protection of civilians is paramount in any armed conflict. Protecting civilians can never mean using them as human shields.”

“Protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than 1 million people to evacuate to the south [of Gaza] where there is no shelter, no food, no water, no medicine and no fuel and then continuing to bomb the south itself.”

“To ease epic suffering, make the delivery of aid easier and safer, and facilitate the release of hostages, I reiterate my appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.”

That is what I would expect from guterres.  A general statement that both sides are wrong, without making any point of what precipitated Israel’s attack on Gaza – i.e. the mass murder of something like 1,400 Israelis, most of them civilians, including unarmed women and children.

But guterres didn’t stop there.  He then decided to assure us that both sides weren’t wrong.  And guess which side he conferred the status of victimhood to?

Any doubt in your mind?  Let me put it to rest.  He said this:

“It is important to also recognize the attacks by hamas did not happen in a vacuum. The palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. They have seen their land steadily devolved(?) by settlements and plagued by violence, their economy stifled, their people displaced and their homes demolished.Their hopes for a political solution to their plight have been vanishing.”`

Uhhhh, really antónio?  Let’s think about this.

-The “56 years” reference is to 1967.  Specifically the war of 1967.  When the armies of four neighboring Arab countries – Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon – massed at Israel’s borders, with the intent of removing Israel from the face of the earth and killing as many Israelis as necessary (or, for that matter, unnecessary.  Hey, it’s just Jews).

-Israel, however improbable it was on paper, won that war.  And in so doing, it won Judea and Samaria (also known as the west bank) the Golan Heights, the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza.

-Who did Israel win these lands from?  “The Palestinians”?

-Nope.  Judea and Samaria were won from Jordan, the Golan Heights was won from Syria, and Gaza and the Sinai were won from Egypt.  “The Palestinians” didn’t own or control one square inch of any of it.

-Eventually Israel gave the Sinai Peninsula back to Egypt over a three year period (from 1979 to 1982) as part of a peace agreement – signed in 1979 and held to by both parties ever since.

-Israel offered the Golan Heights back to Syria.  But that never happened because Syria signed on to the Khartoum Resolution of September, 1967, which said there would be no peace with Israel, no negotiation with Israel and no recognition of Israel as a country.  No agreement, no hand-back of the Golan Heights.

-The West Bank remains held by Israel – but despite that, Israel and Jordan managed to make peace in 1994.  And, as is the case with Egypt, that peace has held 100% ever since.

-As for Gaza?  Israel signed on to the Oslo Accords of 1993, handing control of Gaza over to yasir arafat’s Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).  In 2005, Israel left entirely, handing the entirety of Gaza to Palestinian Arabs.  In 2006, the people there elected hamas as its controlling faction.  And since then, without benefit of further elections, hamas has remained in control – with its mission statement the hamas covenant, which specifically calls for all of Israel to be obliterated, all Jews everywhere – not just Egypt – to be killed, and rejects any and all negotiations/peace offerings.

What you have just read is the long form of telling you that United Nations Secretary General antónio guterres is a lying, Israel-hating sack of shit.  You have just read the short form.

In a subsequent blog I will talk about the United Nations Relief Works Administration (UNRWA) and the schools it runs in Gaza, which teach children from day one nothing but hatred and violence against Jews in general and Israel in particular.

I will also talk about how the United States, under President Joe Biden – who touts himself as Israel’s greatest pal – hands more money to the UNRWA than any other country on earth.

Knowledge is power.  It is good to be powerful.
