Lowenthal is the Jewish character in Katherine Ann Porter’s classic novel “Ship Of Fools” who is consigned to being seated in the dining room with Glocken, a dwarf, to isolate both of them from the other passengers.
Their conversation turned to the treatment afforded Jews in Germany (this was 1933, years before the death camps). Jews were being overtly singled out and discriminated against, but Lowenthal refused to believe his own eyes. He went into a dissertation about how Jews in Germany are loyal citizens (“Germans first, Jews second”), and ended by saying:
“There are nearly a million Jews in Germany. What are they going to do, kill all of us?”
Let’s fast-forward to the present.
Today has been designated by the hamas murderers as “jihad” day. And universities around the United States, along with a number of members of congress (all Democrats, by the way) are honoring it, and honoring the “hang glider” people who entered Israel on Saturday, killing as many innocent, unarmed people – disproportionately women and children – as they could in the most depraved ways they could come up with (the lucky ones were just shot – not burned and/or beheaded).
There are nearly eight million Jews in the United States. What are they going to do, kill us all?
Never again doesn’t exist. There can always be an again.
I hope this keeps you up nights. Because it should.
