“Go somewhere that respects the work you do and you don’t have to beg for a great contract. Go somewhere that has a city council or city manager that openly acknowledges the great work you do, go somewhere that doesn’t have two or more City Council members who hate you (no exaggeration).”
Those are very strong words, and they were aimed at Los Angeles police officers.
Who wrote them? Was it some wild-eyed right wing lunatic? Maybe a member of one of those militia groups who dream of taking over the country?
Uh…no.
Those words were written by Jerretta Sandoz, who happens to be Vice President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL), the city’s police union.
And in case you think her sentiment was a spur of the moment lapse that she’ll spend the rest of her life apologizing for…forget it. She subsequently told the Los Angeles Times that:
“My comments were part of a larger online thread about officers who stated they already decided to leave the LAPD. And I stand by every word I wrote to those who decided or are strongly considering leaving the LAPD for another agency.”
In this context, it should also be mentioned that Los Angeles has lost about 1,000 police officers – that’s 10% of the entire force – in the past four years. And it ain’t because of the pandemic; it is because the city, including its previous and current mayor and its city council, has made their distaste for police perfectly clear.
Common sense dictates that when you don’t feel supported in a job like that, it makes sense to go elsewhere. And that is what L.A. police are doing, in droves…
…which makes the city, already unsafe because of the wackadoo leftward policies and priorities of its political leadership, even more unsafe.
I’ll end with a wish for the folks who live there – the ones who keep voting in the people who are providing their city’s current conditions: I hope you’re enjoying what Los Angeles has become. This is your doing, so savor every moment.
