What happens when a left wing social warrior – and media personality (hardly a unique combination) – decides to make a point about racial justice?
Here, via twitter, is one example: Former NBC News anchor and current talk show host Soledad O’Brien’s twitter response to an Asian woman named Yiatin Chu, who expressed happiness over the Supreme Court decision disallowing affirmative action in college admissions, as practiced by Harvard and North Carolina, on the grounds that it flew in the face of “equal protection”:
“Congrats on screwing over other people of color, ma’am! (Particularly those whose efforts in civil rights paved the way for your family to come to America!)
Can O’Brien really be this ignorant? This obtuse?
Does she actually think that forcing members of the Asian community to get far higher grades and SAT scores for admission into the same university is fair?
Does she actually think that the “screwing over” it creates is of Black people rather than Asians?
Does she actually think the Asian community – about 6% of the U.S. population compared to about 15% for “people of color” – is not a minority?
If Soledad O’Brien’s idea of racial/ethnic justice begins and ends at what Black people do and do not get, I suppose she has a point.
But since that “point” is not only idiotic, but overtly racist as well, maybe it isn’t a very good one.
Thanks, Soledad. Nice to see you’re, er, on top of the issue. But don’t worry. Your attitude is, no doubt, in sync with many, many others in your profession.
