You better prepare yourself for this one, because it is solidly within what, for lack of a better description, I will call the depravity cavity.
From Beth LeBlanc’s article for the Detroit News:
Detroit Democrats plan to vote to censure and bar any future endorsements of a Democratic lawmaker who credited President Donald Trump with advocating for the drug that she said cured her of COVID-19.
State Rep. Karen Whitsett, D-Detroit, broke protocol by meeting with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence during an April 14 meeting of COVID-19 survivors, during which she credited hydroxychloroquine for saving her life.
“Thank you for everything that you have done,” Whitsett told Trump at the meeting. “I did not know that saying thank you had a political line. … I’m telling my story and my truth, and this how I feel and these are my words.”
To summarize:
-State Rep. Karen Whitsett contracted COVID-19.
-She took hydroxychloroquine, a drug President Trump was touting as effective against COVID-19, and recovered.
-She thanked President Trump and Vice President Pence for advocating on behalf of this drug.
-For this, she is now a pariah in the Democrat Party.
And how does the party justify this?
Well, here are the words of Jonathan Kinlock, Chairperson of Whitsett’s 13th Congressional District Democratic Party Organization (I swear, I’m not making this up, he really said it):
“At the end of the day, we have political systems. (Endorsed candidates) do not belong to themselves. They belong to the members and precinct delegates of the Democratic Party.”
Translation: “You are a Democrat. So you cease to be an individual human being with any opinions of your own. We tell you what to say and do, and you say and do it, or you’re going to get your butt handed to you”.
For Rep. Whitsett’s part, her response is:
“I will continue to fight for the city of Detroit and the people in Detroit who need it the most, and that is the Black community. We’re the voiceless, and I don’t care who I got to go up against to do that.
“I’m a Democrat, and I plan on continuing to be a Democrat, but they will change their ways. I have my First Amendment right, and no one will take that away from me.”
Ms. Whitsett comes across as a strong, principled person, who believes that being in a political party does not end her right to speak honestly about what she believes…
…which, apparently, puts her in stark contrast to the party she is a member of.
And what is all of this about? What has created this maelstrom? The fact that Karen Whitsett thanked President Trump because he advocated for a treatment that may well have saved her life.
Is that how low it has gotten in Detroit? And is that atypical? Unique to Detroit? Or is it just as true of other Democrat-controlled cities?
Those are questions that need answering.
