I’ve blogged about this several times already, and I’m doing so again now.
Joe Biden has told us in so many words that his vice presidential running mate will be a woman. Not maybe, not probably, but definitely.
In other words, no man, regardless of qualifications, need apply. Men are disqualified specifically on the grounds that they are men.
Can someone explain to me how this is in any way – even 1% – different from disqualifying a woman for a job. Or a Black person. Or an Asian. Or a Jew. Or a Muslim? Etc. etc. etc.
If you can do that, I will retract my point that Joe Biden’s gender restriction is blatantly sexist and apologize.
Just one thing, however: if your answer is that Joe Biden’s sexism is acceptable because women have been denied jobs in the past based on their gender, don’t bother. I agree 100% that they have and am 100% against it, or any, such discrimination.
But let’s get something straight: you cannot redress gender discrimination by creating more of it. You cannot redress the wrongful treatment of women by wrongfully treating men. Then you are what you think you are fighting against: the victimization is the same, you’ve just substituted one victimized group for another.
On a personal note, let me emphatically state that it is unfair, stupid and irrational to define/classify/hire people based on their gender. I spent my entire professional life working with and for women, and never thought twice about doing so. Some of the best and worst people I worked with were women – exactly what I would say about men.
I have never, and will never, judge people as anything but individuals, regardless of their plumbing, skin tone, religious beliefs/non-beliefs, or anything else…
…which leads me straight back to the fact that when Joe Biden states, definitively, that he will only consider women as his running mate, he is acting as a blatant sexist.
It would be nice if a few of the folks in mainstream media – especially the sanctimonious crowd who can find discrimination everywhere they look – might say or write a few words about this.
I won’t hold my breath waiting.
