Today\’s quote comes to us from Gwyneth Paltrow – an elitist airhead who makes comments which , if media spent one day reporting them they way they report anything Sarah Palin says, would cause her to roll up in a cocoon, and only leave her Brentwood mansion for Oscar night and select events at the country club.
Last night, Ms. Paltrow hosted a fundraiser for Barack Obama and the Democrat Party – in which Mr. Obama did what he has been doing for weeks: he told a group of uber-rich Democrats (the folks media pretend don\’t exist, as they excoriate Republicans for being the party of the rich) about how deprived the middle and lower class is. I\’m guessing the cost of catering this bash was more than the average person makes in a year.
In any event, Ms. Paltrow – it being her mansion and all – said a few words of introduction for Mr. Obama. They included the following:
“I\’m one of your biggest fans, if not the biggest”
“You\’re so handsome that I can\’t speak properly.”
There is no truth to the rumor that Ms. Paltrow had to be physically restrained from fellating Mr. Obama on the spot. (Well, I don\’t think there is…..)
I\’ll bet you think one or both of those comments qualify as Quote Of The Day. But if you do you are wrong. They\’re great contenders, but they pale by comparison to what Ms. Paltrow then told Mr. Obama about his support for equal pay for women (without noting that women are significantly underpaid on President Obama\’s own staff, of course).
Ms Paltrow said this was…
“…veryimportant to me as a working mother.”
A working mother?
Ok, yes it is true that Gwyneth Paltrow works. She makes movies. But the term “working mother” does not suggest the glamorous, rich-celebrity life that the Gwyneth Paltrow\’s of the world lead.
Speaking for myself, I think of a “working mother” more as someone who gets up too early, throws together breakfast for her family, bundles the kids off to school, and rushes to her job at the office or the local Walmart. No mansion. No chef. No servant staff. No limo. No fawning media.
The absolute last thing I think of is the life Gwyneth Paltrow leads.
And, interestingly enough, earlier this year Ms. Paltrow made it clear that she agrees her life does not have the same difficulty level as that of the kind of “working mother” I just described…. In her mind, it is much more difficult and stressful.
Her exact words:
“I think it\’s different when you have an office job, because it\’s routine and, you know, you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening. When you\’re shooting a movie, they\’re like, \’We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks, and then you work 14 hours a day, and that part of it is very difficult. I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as, of course there are challenges, but it\’s not like being on set.”
You sure have that right, Gwyneth. Why, any working mother with an office job would turn your life down flat. Honest.
I award Gwyneth Paltrow Quote Of The Day honors, for the astounding level of obtuseness she displayed with that “working mother” comment (along with the other ones, any of which would have qualified for this “honor”).
Congratulations, Ms. Paltrow. I hope the servants have cleaned up and the mansion is back to normal again.
Oh, and, by the way, my wife and I saw your mother (Blythe Danner) last New Year\’s eve. She wasn\’t hosting a fundraiser for up to $32,000 a pop like you were last night, or wearing a dress with a price tag that exceeded what most working women spend for clothes in five years. She was with a friend, having a quiet dinner at Babbo, the restaurant in lower Manhattan we have been going to for the past five or so years. Apart from delicious food, it features a regular menu instead of a “special one” you need a second mortgage for, so a lot of “regular people” eat there. The kind of place I doubt you or your rich pals would want to show up at.
You could learn a lot from mom.
