Are you familiar with the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994?
Most people are not. But if Joe Biden becomes the Democrat Presidential candidate you can bet it will be a major issue of the campaign…one that has the potential to make it almost impossible for Biden to win the presidency.
Here’s why.
This crime bill – well-meaning legislation meant to reduce crime, but which, in practice, disproportionately affected the Black population and resulted in prison overcrowding nationally – was written by then-Senator Joe Biden.
By contrast, the First Step Act, criminal justice reform which, among other things, overrode Biden’s legislation by reducing the sentences for drug crimes which have put a great many Black people in jail for long terms, was supported, and signed into law, by President Trump last December.
We have talked many times about the necessity for Democrats to hold a virtual monopoly on Black votes, without which a Democrat presidential candidate has almost no chance of winning. In fact, I wrote a blog titled “How Trump Can Win” on election day, 2016, which made this point before any of the votes were counted.
Please use the link, read that election day blog, think about the fact that, according to exit polls, Hillary Clinton got 5% less of the Black vote than Barack Obama did…
…and then consider what effect the combination of record-low Black unemployment during the Trump administration, and passage of the First Step Act, will have on the Black vote.
To bring this home as clearly as possible, here is a relevant paragraph from my above-mentioned 2016 blog:
How important is this? Look at North Carolina – a state that is about 22% Black. If Trump got an additional 5% of the Black vote, it would give him about 1.1% more of the entire state and Hillary Clinton about 1.1% less – a turnaround of 2.2% in Trump’s favor. In a close election that could very well be the difference.
See the point?
Now consider the possibility that Trump’s performance on jobs and his undoing Biden’s crime bill might result in an even higher turnaround – maybe up to 10%. If that were to happen, not only would North Carolina be gone, but so would Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida…in short, Biden would be toast.
How ironic it would be if President Trump, whose critics have relentlessly called him a racist and a White nationalist (not to mention nazi sympathizer, traitor, Putin puppet, and just about everything else but a Martian plant) won the 2020 election on the strength of increased Black support.
And that is before we get to his dramatic upsurge in Latino support…which I’ll hold for another blog.
Evie Fordham, writing for dailycaller.com, has an excellent article on Joe Biden’s crime bill problem. I recommend it to you.
