IS THIS THE ROSENSTEIN END-GAME?

Excerpted an article in today’s Washington Post:

Top law enforcement and intelligence officials, including Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher A. Wray, are scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House on Monday afternoon amid a brewing battle over the bureau’s use of a confidential source to advance the investigation of Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Trump personally called for the meeting, two people familiar with the request said, and a White House spokeswoman said it was put on the books last week.

The people said Trump is expected to question the officials on their refusal to turn over documents to Congress about the early stages of the investigation into whether his campaign coordinated with Russia to influence the 2016 election. He is also likely to bring up the Justice Department’s announcement yesterday that it had asked its inspector general to investigate Trump’s claim that his campaign may have been infiltrated by the FBI for political purposes, one person familiar with the matter said. Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats also will attend.

Forget whether you like or dislike Donald Trump (not easy, I admit, given the polarization of this presidency, but give it a try):

-You have just gone through a full year of being investigated by a team comprised of 13 Democrats, most of whom have donated money to Democrats running for various offices – several to Hillary Clinton in particular –  and no Republicans.

-The result of this year’s efforts has been a bunch of indictments and charges filed against a number of people around you – not one of which has a thing to do with the supposed purpose of the investigation (illustratively, the most recent charges against Paul Manafort are in 2014).

-Now you find out that, as you had suspected (Trump called it “wiretapping”, but it was a lot more), the FBI planted a “spy” or “informant” (you pick the word) to monitor what your campaign was doing — with no indication at all that any such thing was done to the Hillary Clinton campaign*.

Wouldn’t you like to know about that?  I know I would.

The meeting with Rosenstein & Co. was supposed to have started at 3:00PM.  For all I know it’s already over.

I don’t know what its outcome will be, but, unless Rod Rosenstein suddenly morphs into someone far more forthcoming about handing over requested documents – a highly unlikely possibility –  I would not at all be surprised if President Trump walks away with a sound basis to fire Rod Rosenstein…and does just that.

*So far we haven’t heard a thing about a Hillary informant/plant.  But it occurs to me that, whether or not there was one, it is now very much in the FBI’s interests to say there was.  That way, it can be claimed that both sides were subject to the same set of rules.
