Today’s quote comes to us from Rep. Morris “Mo” Brooks (R-AL).
Yesterday, on CNN’s “New Day” show, host Alisyn Camerota, Brooks called the surge of illegal aliens across our border an “invasion”. Ms. Camerota asked why he used that word. Here is his answer:
“Because that’s the word that applies,” he said. “If you go to Webster’s dictionary, it absolutely fits that definition.”
“These folks come into the United States of America illegally when they cross our borders. They don’t do some kind of legal formal application process from another country to assert asylum to come into America.
“Often what you see is they cross our borders illegally. Then they’re advised by lawyers to say the right things that need to be said in order to be able to stay in the United States of America. And the net effect is that it’s costing us … $116 billion a year in net tax losses at the city, county, state and federal level. And we don’t have that kind of money.
“It’s also costing our American and lawful immigrants jobs and they’re suffering from wage suppression because of the huge surge in the labor supply.”
When you ask a politician a question, you often get a dodge, a deflection, rather than an answer. And, even if you do get an answer, it often is so vague that the politician can claim he didn’t say what you think he did.
No such problem with Rep. Brooks, though. There is no mistaking his answer, is there?
And, though I don’t know if the numbers he used are accurate, the claims of huge costs to our economy, loss of jobs for legal citizens, and lower wages because illegals being paid lower wages without benefits drives them down, are all right on target – which is why Mo Brooks wins Quote Of The Day honors.
We need to do something about this. And I mean something serious, not the BS, “kick the can down the road” band-aids most politicians have offered in the past, and continue to offer now.
Maybe President Trump will be the one to successfully take this on and maybe he won’t. But – very important if you by some chance read this, Mr. President – if your solution begins and ends at preventing illegals from jumping the border, and doesn’t include massive revision of our immigration policy, you’re wasting your time.
More on this in the next blog.
