I\’m not looking to pick on Hillary Clinton. I mean that honestly.
But she is tossing softballs, one after another at us, that just beg to be hit out of the park.
Did you know that, this week, Ms. Clinton told (mostly Hillary-sympathetic) Ed Pilkington of London\’s Guardian newspaper that she, and hubby Bubba – with an estimated net worth of between $50 and $100 million dollars – “are not truly well off”?
I kid you not, she really did. Here is Mr. Pilkington\’s write-up:
America\’s glaring income inequality is certain to be a central bone of contention in the 2016 presidential election. But with her huge personal wealth, how could Clinton possibly hope to be credible on this issue when people see her as part of the problem, not its solution?
“\’Butthey don\’t see me as part of the problem,\’ she protests, \’because wepay ordinary income tax, unlike a lot of people who are truly welloff, not to name names; and we\’ve done it through dint of hard work,\’she says, letting off another burst of laughter. If past form is anyguide, she must be finding my question painful.”
Here is a video of Ms. Clinton\’s comment being reported on CNN this morning – with co-host Alison Kosik spontaneously busting out laughing at the absurdity of her comment:
What do you suppose Barack Obama, and Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi, etc. etc. etc. would have said about a Republican with even one tenth of that kind of money characterizing him/herself as “not truly well off”?
Am I misremembering, or did Hillary Clinton also say, just two weeks ago, that she and hubby Bubba were so “dead broke” when they left the White House in 2001 that they had trouble keeping up the mortgage payments on their estates?
How about my longer-term memory? Is it failing me, or did Hillary Clinton\’s all-but-certain run for the 2008 nomination fall by the wayside because she made similarly boneheaded comments when running against then relatively unknown Barack Obama – among the most notable being that, in 1996, she was fired on by snipers while deplaning in Bosnia, which she later had to take back because it was so easily proven to be a complete lie?
Is this really the best that Democrats have for 2016?
To paraphrase Meredith Wilson\’s great lyric line from “The Music Man”, That spells trouble with a capital T, and that rhymes with C, and that stands for Clinton.
