Just one more quick post before Yom Kippur:
If President Obama thinks that by standing in front of an angry crowd of Latino activists, as he did yesterday, telling them they\’ll get everything they want – after the election – and uttering “si se puede, si, votamos” (“yes we can, if we vote”), they will go running to the polling booths on his behalf, he is, to paraphrase Ricky Martin, livin\’ la fantasia loca. Because that is a crazy fantasy.
The Latino people who are demanding amnesty already have seen Mr. Obama break his promise to effect the changes by the end of summer. Why would this latest carrot-and-stick promise be credible when the last one wasn\’t?
All Barack Obama has managed to do is remind the anti-amnesty crowd that he is going to unilaterally give some form of amnesty to millions of people, while reminding the pro-amnesty crowd that, to him, amnesty is nothing more than a cynical political game – i.e. that he could not care less about them, beyond whether they vote Democrat on election day.
I used to think that, though Mr. Obama was a lousy president, he was a good campaigner. Now I\’m not even sure of that.
Ok, that does it until after Yom Kippur.
