Today’s quote comes to us from Roy Moore, the candidate for senate from Alabama – a man with, at least as of this moment, no party, given that Democrats have their own candidate, Douglas Jones, and Republicans have turned away from him en masse.
Mr. Moore’s quote concerns the unevidenced, unprovable accusations made earlier this month by Leigh Corfman that he sexually molested her when she was 14 years old – accusations that spurred other women to make equally unevidenced, unprovable charges:
“For forty years I have been closely scrutinized in the press and the public media. I have had investigations by the attorney general, I’ve had investigations by the judicial inquiry commission on more than one occasion, I’ve had investigations by the court of the judiciary, I’ve been in five statewide campaigns in which they do opposition research—they do investigations, as you can see in every one I’ve ever run—and three county elections and two major controversies over religious liberty and the Ten Commandments and same-sex marriage. I’ve been investigated more than any other person in this country. That grown women would wait forty years to come right before an election to bring charges is absolutely unbelievable.”
Does Roy Moore make a strong case against the credibility of this allegation? Yes he does, which is why Moore wins Quote Of The Day honors.
Unfortunately, however, it also “wins” for putting me (and, I would think, a great many others) in a lousy position, given that, based on his positions – especially those on social issues – I do not want someone like Roy Moore within 100 miles of a U.S. Senate seat.
I do not want an evangelical zealot trying to impose his views on everyone else in the senate…
…but I also do not want someone railroaded out of a senate seat by unsubstantiated charges – a technique which might result in the defeat of someone I don’t want in office today, but might also result in the defeat of someone I do want in office tomorrow.
It’s a very empty feeling, having no good result as a possibility.
One other thing: Savannah Guthrie interviewed Leigh Corfman on this morning’s Today Show. And instead of asking her key questions that are fully germane to her claims – such as to produce proof she was 14 at the time (there are reports that she understates her age by several years), or explaining the similar charges she has made against other men, also without proof, or her dissolute life (three divorces, out of wedlock children, three different bankruptcies, etc.) – all she did was toss batting-practice pitches to Corfman for her to hit out of the park.
You can see it by clicking here.
Disgraceful. And about as journalistic as a biography written by a doting mother.

And the matter of her attorney, Ms. Glory TotallyCrimson, waving Leigh Corfman’s school year book around — implying it proves something.
But Glory WON’T permit the yearbook to be analyzed by professional handwriting experts, and never asked Leah if she actually SAW Roy Moore write the inscription.
Also it is in two different color inks and both numbers and letters are written two different ways when the black ink inscription is compared to the blue ink inscription.
