Democrats were at least somewhat retrieving themselves from chaos tonight.
While I may disagree with a lot of the politics they espoused, speakers like Michelle Obama and Elizabeth Warren made strong pitches for their points of view. They connected impressively with the crowd.
And then there was Bernie Sanders…who, at least ostensibly, was at the podium to support Hillary Clinton.
Throughout his speech, Mr. Sanders relentlessly gave things away “for free”, without even the remotest explanation of how any of the giveaways would be paid for.
And then, to make matters far worse, claimed that Hillary Clinton was on board with what he was proposing.
If Republicans could have orchestrated the Sanders speech, so that they could then add up the cost of those proposals and demand to know where the money was coming from, I doubt they would have changed even one word.
The party had no choice. They had to give Bernie Sanders this prime-time speaking slot – partly because of all the votes he got, partly out of guilt for essentially stealing any chance he had to win the nomination.
Mr. Sanders has repaid them by tying Hillary Clinton to his ridiculous “everything for free” rant, which is unexplainable, unsustainable, guaranteed to be used daily by Donald Trump, along with other Republicans, throughout the campaign.
And this is only day one of the convention.
I can’t wait for tomorrow.
