For years the thought police in this country, supported by numerous members of our wonderful “neutral” media…and members of the Obama administration….have demanded that the Washington Redskins football team, which has had this name since before most of them were born, change it. Why? Because it is offensive to Native Americans.
But did anyone ever actually ask Native Americans?
Well, yeah. A poll was taken in 2004 by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, which indicated that they really don’t care about the name. By 90% to 9%
Wouldn’t it stand to reason that these findings end the issue?
Nah, of course not. Why let reality get in the way of a good opportunity to whine that someone or something was being offensive. Why give up that opportunity to feel morally superior. So the Annenberg study was ignored.
Well, it is now 2016. And someone decided to ask again.
The Washington Post interviewed about 500 Native Americans to find out how they feel about the name. And here are the results:
It does not bother me: 90%
It’s offensive: 9%
That’s right. Exactly the same results as 2004. 90% to 9%
Does THAT end the issue?
Of course not. The thought police can never be satisfied by facts like this any more than they were satisfied by the 2004 research.
These people are not about to accept clear evidence that they are whining about something that the supposedly aggrieved people they insist they’re defending are not aggrieved at all.
So it is a near-certain bet that there will be continued pressure on the Washington football team to change its name. And you can count on the same “neutral” media to stand with them, too – maybe even the Washington Post.
Am I wrong? I hope so. But I’ll give pretty good odds that I’m not.
Any takers?
