Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is on the spot.
President Trump negotiated a re-do of the NAFTA agreement – the one that has screwed the USA for the past 25 years. It is called USMCA (the United States Mexico Canada Agreement).
Mexico is on board (its senate just voted 114-4 for passage).
Canada’s Prime Minister Trudeau is fully supportive of the deal, and according to Zachary Halaschak’s article for the Washington Examiner, will be meeting with Ms. Pelosi today in an effort to get her, and other Democrats, behind it.
So what’s the problem? Why would Ms. Pelosi have any issue with this new, far more USA-friendly, agreement coming to fruition?
The problem is that if USMCA were to pass/replace NAFTA, it would be a major feather in the cap of…President Trump. It would be something he could point to as a huge achievement, and a testament to his negotiating skills.
In other words, it would be a great campaign issue for 2020.
And since, from a political perspective, it is vitally important that Donald Trump not have any huge achievements that might help him win next year’s election, Ms. Pelosi is inventing reasons not to bring this to a vote.
From Mr. Halaschak’s article:
Nancy Pelosi has the authority to bring legislation on the matter before the chamber, but has expressed hesitation about the deal, which she says lacks adequate mechanisms to enforce its labor and environmental provisions.
Both other countries are fine with the agreement as it is, but they don’t know what they’re doing. See, Ms. Pelosi is far more knowledgeable on “labor and environmental provisions” than they are. It has nothing to do with politics, of course (wink, wink).
The bottom line here is that, the better the United States does from now until next election day, the worse it is for Democrats.
So Nancy Pelosi – with most mainstream media looking the other way as they so often do on Democrats’ behalf – is going to hold up the immensely important, beneficial USMCA legislation because it deprives Trump of a “victory”.
This is exactly the kind of crap that got Donald Trump elected in the first place.
However dubious Trump’s credentials were, however objectionable that big mouth of his was, the fact that he wasn’t another BS-laden politician putting political strategy above all else – i.e. he wasn’t another Nancy Pelosi – carried him to victory in 2016.
If Pelosi doesn’t send USMCA to a vote, and soon, you can bet President Trump will be tweeting about it, and about why.
As he should.
