You may be wondering why I have yet to post anything about Donald Trump’s sudden decision to go to Mexico and meet with President Enrique Peña Nieto (apparently at his invitation – an invitation declined, so far, by Hillary Clinton…possibly because she wants to go there afterwards and show how much more popular her stand on immigration is with Nieto).
I am withholding judgment because this is so spur-of-the-moment, so outlandish, I don’t know what to even think about it – yet.
That said, it certainly is fascinating. And a huge gamble for Mr. Trump.
If his trip goes well – i. e. if he and President Nieto have anything approaching a productive session, it will establish currently non-existent credentials for Mr. Trump as someone who can deal on equal footing with a head of state.
If Nieto, whose poll numbers are ugly (in the low 20’s) uses it to castigate Trump for his stand on immigration (a very definite possibility), and Trump does not respond with a childish temper tantrum in return, he will look every bit as good as if there were a productive session….and will come across not only as someone who means what he says, but also as someone capable of rising above being baited by a desperate foreign leader.
If it does not go well on any level, Mr. Trump probably will forever solidify his status as nothing more than a barroom loudmouth – which, let’s be honest, is where is he stands right now.

I can’tell wait to see how this turns out.
