The United States=Mexico-Canada trade deal (USMCA), the one which has languored in the House of Representatives for over a year, on the claim that it needed fine-tuning regarding factory inspections and workers’ rights, suddenly – unexpectedly – has been green-lighted by Nancy Pelosi.
Funny how, on the day Democrats announced articles of impeachment against President Trump, they also magically found that USMCA is okey-dokey…..thus assuring that, with impeachment dominating the news, it will get as little coverage as possible.
From a political standpoint, I can’t say I blame them either. USMCA is a major – and I do mean major – accomplishment, if only because it replaces the stinko NAFTA deal cooked up by Bill Clinton, and (justifiably) scoffed at by people on both sides of the aisle.
H. Ross Perot, who ran third-party for the presidency in 1992 (and got about 20% of the vote), had this to say about NAFTA at the time:
“We have got to stop sending jobs overseas. It’s pretty simple: If you’re paying $12, $13, $14 an hour for factory workers and you can move your factory South of the border, pay a dollar an hour for labor, … have no health care—that’s the most expensive single element in making a car— have no environmental controls, no pollution controls and no retirement, and you don’t care about anything but making money, there will be a giant sucking sound going south.”
As you can see, Mr. Perot had quite a way with words. And he was right.
But, despite his prescient warnings, we have spent all this time living under the burden of NAFTA….until President Trump finally did something about it.
Expect USMCA to sail through the house, sail through the senate, and quickly be signed by President Trump.
Expect Nancy Pelosi to try convincing voters that she, and the overall Democrat Party, deserve the credit for it
As for Mr. Trump intention to take credit for USMCA, here is today’s tweet:
America’s great USMCA Trade Bill is looking good. It will be the best and most important trade deal ever made by the USA. Good for everybody – Farmers, Manufacturers, Energy, Unions – tremendous support. Importantly, we will finally end our Country’s worst Trade Deal, NAFTA!
Mr. Trump’s unwavering “talent” for hyperbole aside, he is right about the major positive impact USMCA will have.
And if Nancy Pelosi thinks she and Democrats rather than he and Republicans will be getting credit for it, she better think again.
