What do you do when you have a candidate for the Senate from your own party, one you did not endorse in the primary, who has genuinely objectionable views….but you know will be sure to back most of your agenda?
You do a “disagree and duck”. Which is exactly what happened yesterday.
From article at politico.com:
Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday that the White House does not agree with comments by Roy Moore, the Republican Senate candidate in Alabama, that many found offensive, including that homosexual conduct should be made illegal and that Muslims should not be allowed to serve in Congress.
“I would certainly say we don’t agree with those comments,” Sanders said of Moore’s past remarks. “But in terms of whether or not I’m going to get in to the back and forth over another candidate, we’re here to focus on the president and the president’s agenda, and those are the questions and the people that I can answer for.”
Yeah, we disagree with him, but let’s not get into that there are other issues…..etc.
Clumsy, almost certainly insincere, but probably the best Trump/Sanders could do.
I grew up in Brooklyn and Queens – mostly Queens. Trump was also a Queens boy and, though in far different economic circumstances, grew up not far from where I did. If you think his “pussy” comments – made in private when he did not know a mic was nearby were raw, I have a feeling you’d find that his opinion of Roy Moore leaves them in the dust.
But…though Moore might be a right wing zealot and religious fanatic, he’s a Republican one. So Trump, through Press Secretary Sanders, is stuck with putting out his disagreement and hoping against hope that nobody will ask again.
They will, Mr. President. Count on it.
