Today’s quote comes to us from Scott Byer, a Google engineer. And, though not new (the quote is from November 9, 2016, the day after Donald Trump won the presidency), I have no doubt it remains current.
Here is what Mr. Byer lamented at that time:
“This was an election of false equivalencies, and Google, sadly, had a hand in it.
“How many times did you see the Election now card with items from opinion blogs (Breitbart, Daily Caller) elevated next to legitimate news organizations? That’s something that can and should be fixed.
“I think we have a responsibility to expose the quality and truthfulness of sources – because not doing so hides real information under loud noises.
Beyond that, let’s concentrate on teaching critical thinking. A little bit of that would go a long way. Let’s make sure that we reverse things in four years – demographics will be on our side.”
-We – not the public, but we – should decide what is and isn’t real news.
-We – not the public, but we – should decide what is and isn’t truthful news.
-And we -using the power that google has over what information reaches the public and how accessible it is – should use that power to promote what we believe instead of providing neutral information and letting individuals decide for themselves.
Anyone who has followed the prolific trail of instances where conservative voices have been squelched by social media venues – almost all of which are owned and operated by left wingers, like Jeff Bezos, Jack Dorsey, Mark Zuckerberg, etc. – knows this plan is already operational.
How many times have you read the same “it was a mistake, but we fixed it now” line from these people? How many times does this have to happen before you realize it is no mistake at all?
And – most importantly – how completely will this censorship, this selective availability of information, be implemented for 2020? The answer to that question is also the answer to how completely voters are susceptible to being manipulated in our next presidential election.
I don’t care what area of the political spectrum you reside in, that should scare the hell out of you.
If you’re a conservative, you already know why you should be scared…and probably are.
And if you’re to the left, remember that what goes around, comes around. One day the other side may hold the reins of power to manipulate the public, and you will be on the wrong end of this disgrace.
I award Scott Byer Quote Of The Day honors, for stating this position, and what it would mean to public access to information, so clearly: a position that we already see being played out by google and other social media giants with no sign of abating.
President Trump has a great many major issues to deal with. If he’s as smart as he thinks he is, this either already is on the list, or will be very soon. If he isn’t? You can figure out the consequences of that possibility for yourself.
