Today’s quote comes to us from Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback of the Green Bay Packers. It “explains” why they and their opponents, the Chicago Bears, all linked arms and stood during the showing of the flag and singing of the National Anthem last night:
“This is about equality. This is about unity and love and growing together as a society and starting a conversation around something that may be a little bit uncomfortable for people. But we’ve got to come together and talk about these things and grow as a community, as a connected group of individuals in our society, and we’re going to continue to show love and unity, and this week we’re going to ask the fans to join in as well and come together and show people that we can be connected and we can grow together.”
See, all of a sudden it isn’t about overt disrespect of the flag and the anthem. It has now, magically, morphed into a statement of love, unity and togetherness.
Or….maybe it’s because fan fury and a few advertisers telling the NFL to take a hike have caused a belated realization that crapping on the flag and anthem could affect revenues – thus player paychecks.
I award Aaron Rodgers Quote Of The Day “honors” for having the cajones to float this statement in the hopes that enough people will buy it so the “kneeling” issue will just fade away.
I’ll be very interested to see if fans are sufficiently compassionate and loving – or gullible and easily manipulated – for it to work.
