Let’s start with my opinion that Robert Mueller should have been fired as Independent Counsel last year.
Why? Because he assembled a staff comprised mostly of Democrats – I don’t mean just registered Democrats, I mean Democrats who contributed their money to other Democrats, several of whom contributed money specifically to President Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton . By contrast, just one, James Quarles, ever contributed to any Republicans…but even he gave the vast majority of his money, in total, to Democrats.
That would have been enough for me right there. Mueller did not put together a neutral staff, he put to gether a pro-Democrat Star Chamber.
Now, let’s fast-forward to the present.
The evidence mounts, day by day, that there was a conspiracy of operatives in the FBI and DOJ which, unsuccessful at getting Hillary Clinton elected, decided to upend the candidate who beat her, Donald Trump.
The facts – both massive and growing – have been detailed for months by John Solomon and Sara Carter of thehill.com, and by Sean Hannity at Fox.
With every new piece of evidence, the question inherently arises, more and more prominently: where the HELL have mainstream media been in these scandals. How can they possibly have ignored/suppressed/buried these stories and how can they possibly continue to do so?
So what do these media do to avoid the inevitability, in my opinion, of eventually being shamed and exposed? They put up material that is supposed to deflect your attention from their disgraceful abrogation of journalistic integrity.
Here is the latest attempt, seen in these excerpts from Michael S. Schmidt and Maggie Haberman’s article in the New York Times…then put up by others within the media echo chamber:
President Trump ordered the firing last June of Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation, according to four people told of the matter, but ultimately backed down after the White House counsel threatened to resign rather than carry out the directive.
First, he claimed that a dispute years ago over fees at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., had prompted Mr. Mueller, the F.B.I. director at the time, to resign his membership. The president also said Mr. Mueller could not be impartial because he had most recently worked for the law firm that previously represented the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Finally, the president said, Mr. Mueller had been interviewed to return as the F.B.I. director the day before he was appointed special counsel in May.
Let’s forget that Trump denies this ever happened and calls it another example of “fake news”. Let’s, for the sake of discussion, assume it is 100% true.
This major front-page story, this huge deflection from serious news, consists of a report, based (as they always seem to be) on anonymous sources, that Trump thought about getting rid of Mueller – for three perfectly legitimate reasons – and was talked out of doing so.
In other words, absolutely nothing happened.
THIS is media’s “shiny object”? The bombshell “news” that is supposed to keep our attention away from the obvious, clearer-and-clearer corruption in the FBI and DOJ, which used to be among our most cherished institutions?
As a United States citizen, I cannot tell you how sick I am over this. How sick I am over the fact that this corruption came into being during the last administration – also with virtually no media attention while it took place. How worried I am that, even if the FBI and DOJ are cleansed of these people, their reputations will never be the same.
Let me say again what I said at the beginning: if it were up to me, Mueller would have been fired last year. If it were up to me, he’d be fired today.
And, if it were up to me, as many charges as are applicable would be fired against the people who, in my opinion, conspired to put us in this mess…with the execrable james comey being first on my list.
Oh, one other thing: isn’t it an amazing coincidence that this nothingburger story comes out on the day that President Trump speaks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, after getting a reception far more positive than his media enemies ever expected?
FYI: I just watched the end of his speech. He got a standing ovation.
UPDATE: I owe readers an apology. I should have picked up on this but didn’t…and therefore am drawing from John Hinderaker’s latest commentary at powerlineblog.com:
The New York Times article I excerpted above is titled “Trump Ordered Mueller Firing Last June”.
That is a lie.
Donald Trump is the President of the United States. As President, he has the power to fire Robert Mueller any time he cares to. As Mr. Hinderaker correctly points out, therefore, if Trump ordered Mueller fired, Mueller would have been fired. Period.
Nor did Trump fire Mueller and then subsequently change his mind. Mueller did not receive some pink slip which was subsequently rescinded.
Assuming the meeting in question actually took place (with today’s Times, nothing is taken for granted), what happened was that Trump talked about firing Mueller with others, heard what they had to say, and then decided against it.
Anyone remember when the New York Times was a credible source of information? If so, you have quite a memory.
