THE JUSSIE SMOLLETT ATTACK: LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKE A HOAX

First, allow me to refresh your memory:”Empire” actor Jussie Smollett claims that, after leaving a Subway shop in Chicago at about 2:00AM, two men verbally abused him with racist and homophobic slurs, then beat him severely, tossed bleach or some similar substance on him, and put a noose around his neck, while screaming “This is MAGA country”.

The problem? There is absolutely no  evidence to corroborate any of this.

There is no video surveillance of the attack.

And though Mr. Smollett now says the two screamed “This is MAGA country” while attacking him, his initial description of the event made no such claim.

These factors, in and of themselves, would make a reasonable person at least a little suspicious about Mr. Smollett’s story

But wait. Now there’s more.

Now Mr. Smollett’s music manager, Brandon Moore, has chimed in, telling the police that he and Smollett were on the phone when the attack took place…

…yet when the police asked Smollett for his phone, I assume so they could check the time of the call, Smollett refused to turn it over.

What possible reason would he have for not allowing the police access to his phone, other than that the call never took place?

If this isn’t a hoax, it’s about as good a copy of one as I’ve ever seen.

And, if it is a hoax, the saddest part is who is damaged by it.

There is no doubt that homophobia and race hatred do exist, and people are attacked for being gay, Black or both.

Will the next gay and/or Black man who is legitimately attacked, be treated as a victim, or will he, instead, have to defend himself against accusations that it’s a just another BS story like Jussie Smollett’s?

Look, we still don’t know whether this is real or not – even though, as things now stand, the odds are heavily against it.

The police are all over this, so we should have the answers soon enough, and then we can make our judgments.  Let’s be smart and wait until then, okay?

  • Missing from so many stories is the polar vortex. Weather was the major story of the week and residents were advised to stay inside. Work at home. Schools were closed. Public transportation had been drastically cut down. Mail service was suspended.
