What is the difference between hate and comedy?
Well, in Hollywood the difference is that hate defines as anything aimed at anyone to the left of center, and comedy defines as anything aimed at anyone to the right of center.
Want a case in point? Here is a truly ugly one, via excerpts from Justin Kroll’s article in Variety:
Having already famously portrayed former President George W. Bush in various comedy sketches,Will Ferrell is now setting his sights on another former commander-in-chief.
Sources tell Variety Ferrell is attached to star as President Reagan in the Black List script “Reagan.”
Penned by Mike Rosolio, the story begins at the start of the then-president’s second term when he falls into dementia and an ambitious intern is tasked with convincing the commander-in-chief that he is an actor playing the president in a movie.
The script was so popular following its announcement on the Black List, an annual catalog of the top unproduced scripts in Hollywood, that a live read was done recently done in March starring Lena Dunham and John Cho.
Ferrell will produce along with production banner Gary Sanchez Productions. The package currently is without a director, but will soon be shopped to studios.
Wow, isn’t this great? A comedy about conservative icon (and one of the most popular Presidents in US history), Ronald Reagan, in which he has Alzheimer’s – not in gradual degrees after his presidency but to a significant degree throughout his second term – and an intern who gets him through it by convincing the debilitated Reagan he is making a movie.
A laff riot, I’m sure.
The fact that he would have considered it until the outcry, makes him a pig to me…along with the people who read for parts in it, including lena dunham and josh brolin.
They can all go straight to hell.
