Sometimes I think politicians have secretly made a bet on who can get the public to believe/accept the most ridiculous position on a given issue.
In the United States, Democrats are usually the culprits – not because Republicans are incapable of the same behavior, but because, since most most media are in bed with/willing to go along with Democrats, they have far more latitude to do so.
This brings us to the latest meme, parroted by numerous Democrats over the past several days: that the illegal immigration situation on Mexico’s border is a manufactured crisis; i.e. a nothingburger artificially being built up by those rascally Republicans.
Are they correct? Well, here are a few facts:
-Somewhere between 11 million and 22 million illegals (depending on which report you read) have crossed that border.
-In the last two years, there have been 730,000 apprehensions of illegals at the border. That is about 1,000 a day. In addition, there have been 623 deaths of illegals near the border, due to a variety of factors very much including violent criminality.
-According to the U.S. Census, approximately 63% of all “non-citizen” (illegal) households are on public assistance. In other words, subsidized by taxpayers.
-As a group, they commit a lot of crime. And a lot of that crime is violence and drug-related. And, given that so many are “living in the shadows” – i.e. fearful of reporting crimes committed by other illegals – the likelihood is that the extent of such crimes is significantly understated.
Does all this add up to a crisis?
To me, the answer, self-evidently, is yes.
How about you?
