Another day of government shutdown over building a wall between the United States and Mexico.

Another day of Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, telling us a wall is, among other things, ineffective, immoral, and a racist way of keeping “brown people” out of the country.

And another day that most media ignore how these same people voted when a wall was proposed almost 13 years, and millions of illegals, ago.

But we’re not going to ignore it here.

In 2006, there was a piece of legislation identifed as H.R. 6061 (109th): Secure Fence Act of 2006.  Passage of this act would create a wall across 700 miles of the border between Mexico and the United States.

Would you like to see how the vote fared in the Senate?  OK, here it is. In summary:

-The vote passed 80-19 (one non-vote);

-Republicans voted in favor by 54 – 1.

-And Democrats voted in favor by 26-17….

-…which means that if Democrats alone had voted – no Republicans at all – it would have passed with room to spare.

In other words, when Donald Trump was not President, Democrats had no problem voting in favor of a wall.

“But wait”, you might say.  “That was almost 13 years ago.  These are not the same people who are attacking the idea of a wall today”.

If you’re thinking of saying that, however, I suggest you note that, among the 26 Democrats voting in favor, were Chuck Schumer.  And Hillary Clinton.  And Diane Feinstein.

Were Mr. Schumer, Ms. Clinton and Ms. Feinstein all in favor of an ineffective, immoral, racist way of keeping brown people out of the country?

If so, either they have “evolved” since then, or they’ve decided that it is politically beneficial to shut down the government over a wall rather than give President Trump a victory on what, arguably, is his signature campaign promise.

Personally, I don’t see any “evolution” here.  I see politics and politics alone.

How about you?

  • I think the lawmakers should go on 1/2 pay until this is resolved. The other half of their pay can go to the Coast Guard or some other worthy government employee.
