Fascinating article by NBC News’ Carol E. Lee and Courtney Kube.
Here’s how it starts:
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump authorized the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani seven months ago if Iran’s increased aggression resulted in the death of an American, according to five current and former senior administration officials.
The presidential directive in June came with the condition that Trump would have final signoff on any specific operation to kill Soleimani, officials said.
That decision explains why assassinating Soleimani was on the menu of options that the military presented to Trump two weeks ago for responding to an attack by Iranian proxies in Iraq, in which a U.S. contractor was killed and four U.S. service members were wounded, the officials said.
The timing, however, could undermine the Trump administration’s stated justification for ordering the U.S. drone strike that killed Soleimani in Baghdad on Jan. 3. Officials have said Soleimani, the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ elite Quds Force, was planning imminent attacks on Americans and had to be stopped.
The importanceo f this article is that, assuming it is accurate, we now know that taking out qassem soleimani was not a spur of the minute reaction.
Despite the reporting of our hate-Trump media, this was not some snap judgment of President Trump’s, made over a Big Mac and fries. It was discussed, determined, and had a significant condition attached – the death of one or more Americans.
As for “undermining” of Trump’s “stated justification” – an imminent threat of more attacks…
…why would anyone seriously doubt they were coming? We had just sustained the deadly attack which killed our contractor and the attack on our Iraqi embassy. On the heels of those two “successes”, soleimani leaves Iran and arrives in Baghdad.
Why did he come there? What reason would a career mass-murdering terrorist show up at the scene of current terrorist activities? Let’s get real: it wasn’t to grab dinner and take in a show.
In a sane world, this information would be very good for President Trump. It would show that this was a studied, considered decision that was carried out near-perfectly (i.e. with minimum damage to anyone or anything other than someimani and the people with him).
But with well over 90% negative coverage of Trump by our media? I’m surprised they aren’t calling for another article of impeachment.
Hey, maybe Nancy will give it a try. Hold up the other two long enough to add this one as well. I mean, how dare Trump for taking out soleimani. What did he do that was so terrible, right?
