Did you know that Donald Trump is promoting violence against our fiercely neutral media, for daring to present a fiercely neutral view of his candidacy and presidency?
Oh, you didn’t know that? Well let me “prove” it to you by posting the following quotes, all of which have eventuated in the last couple of days (quite a coincidence there – you’d almost think they were orchestrated that way):
“Hold on. I want to get Jeff Mason back in this conversation. You’re the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, you’ve met with Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House team—have you raised the concern all of us in the news media have about the president calling us enemies of the American people? Because that is a very, very harsh statement and potentially very dangerous.”: CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, yesterday
Chris, at what point does this become dangerous? And I’m not just talking about dangerous in terms of tearing at the social fabric, I’m talking about dangerous as in a journalist gets hurt, because I can tell you working overseas in war zones, people are emboldened by the actions of this administration, emboldened by the all-out declaration of war on the media. If I’m getting it in the neck, Chris, I can only imagine what a person like you is dealing with. At what point does this become reckless or irresponsible, Chris?”: CNN’s Clarissa Ward
“We are bullied and browbeaten every day, and I pretty much have had enough of it,” Karem said. “There’s really only two ways to deal with a bully — turn them into your friend, (but) I don’t think that’s a possibility, or let them know exactly what’s up, and you’re not going to take the bullying anymore. We can’t take the bullying anymore. It’s undermining the Fourth Estate, it’s undermining the First Amendment.”: Playboy Magazine White House Correspondent Brian Karem
“The problem is, and this is what I worry about more than anything else, is that there are people in the country who don’t understand that this a cynical reality TV game, and are going to hear over and over again from the president that the reporters, journalists are enemies of the state…and someone is going to do something violent against journalists in a large way, and then I know where the fault lies.”: The Atlantic’s Editor in Chief, Jeffrey Goldberg
Very strong words, aren’t they? And that’s just a sampling.
Now: where were this bunch when their own news organizations spent over half a year building a story about Donald Trump stealing the 2016 election in a nefarious plot with Russia? Could that possibly encourage violence against Mr. Trump or the people around him?
And where were they when, on college campuses and in public demonstrations around the country, hooded, masked leftists perpetrated violence and property damage in an effort to disallow conservatives from speaking? Does mostly looking the other way/not following up on who these anarchist fascists are and what their politics are, encourage violence?
And where were they when celebrity after celebrity – not just kathy griffin (the only one who actually got some serious negative press over it), but Johnny Depp, and Rob Reiner, and Joy Behhar and a good-sized list of others suggested Trump be assassinated, and called for all out war against him? Does that encourage violence?
And where were they when Hillary Clinton, the (astoundingly poor) candidate Trump beat last year, told us she was part of the “resistance” against him? Does the leader of the Democrat Party calling for resistance against the legally elected President of the United States encourage violence?
Donald Trump has done nothing other than call out mainstream media for putting up “fake news”. Sometimes his claims are wrong. Sometimes his claims are exaggerated. Sometimes his claims have merit.
If this scares media personalities into fearing for their safety, then maybe they should reflect on their own behavior during the past year, and what it has done for the safety of Mr. Trump and his people.
Or do they think the guy who – having spent considerable time parroting what they have “reported” about Trump on his facebook page – tried to kill a dozen or so Republicans, severely wounding Rep. Brian Scalise in the process, was a Tea Party supporter?
