Let’s start with the following statistics from a just-published report by NBC News – Chicago:

Homicides and shootings have surged in Chicago during the first seven months of the year.

From Jan. 1 through the end of July, there were 440 homicides in Chicago and 2,240 people shot, including many of those who were killed, according to statistics released Saturday by the police department.

There were 290 homicides and 1,480 shootings, including people who were killed, in the first seven months of last year.

For the mathematicians in the house, that is a rise of 52% in homicides and 51% in overall shootings – in a city that was being ravaged by shootings and homicides even with the lower numbers last year.

So what excuse does Mayor Lori Lightfoot have for the surge in gun violence which has “upgraded” Chicago from wild west to shooting gallery status?

Mayor Lightfoot blames everywhere else.

That’s right.  Everywhere else.  Everywhere else is the culprit, because everywhere else has no serious gun control, so illegal guns come into Chicago from there.  It’s everywhere else’s fault.  See?

(And, in fairness to her, she’s not the first Chicago Mayor to make this claim.)

The problem with Mayor Lightfoot’s excuse?  It is a load of what Chicagoans used to shovel out of the union stockyards.

In answer, here is the first part of David Harsanyi’s deservedly skeptical, sarcastic article at National Review:

The tragically incompetent mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, appeared on CNN’s State of the Union this weekend to deflect attention from the horror show unfolding in her city by blaming interlopers for its spiking murder rate: “We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons — that is hurting cities like Chicago.”

Although these accusations have leveled by Chicago politicians for decades now, they are a myth.

For one thing, there is no state in the nation with “virtually no gun control” or “no background checks.” Every time anyone in the United States purchases a gun from a federal firearms licensee (FFL) — a gun store, a gun show, it doesn’t matter — the seller runs a background check on the buyer through the NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) database. In some cases, the FFL checks to see if the buyer has passed a background check via a state-issued concealed-carry permit. In states that allow individual private sales, it is illegal to knowingly sell to anyone who you believe is obtaining a firearm for criminal purposes.

Those who cross state lines to buy guns undergo the same background check, and the sale is processed by an FFL in the buyer’s home state. The exact same laws apply to all online sales.

Mr. Harsanyi goes on, and offers a great deal more to debunk the Lightfood excuse.  Do yourself a favor and read it all.

Then you can be expected to wonder why, if this is what Chicago has descended to, if this is how unsafe it has become for Chicagoans to go about their lives – most especially in the gang-ravaged Black and Latino communities where decent people have to fear for their lives every time they walk out of their homes – Chicago’s voters keep electing the same one-party governance that brought the city to its sorry pass.

In other blogs, I have used the term “Duh Democrats” to describe people who do not think about their vote, do not consider alternatives, but just dumbly, reflexively vote Democrat regardless of the circumstances.  It is hard not to conclude the “Duh Democrat” vote is what keeps Chicago where it is.

Too bad about that the “where” has become.
