Congratulations on Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, for turning Virginia from purple (i.e. could go either way) to blue (count it in the Democrat column).
Excerpted from Graham Moomaw’s article for the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed an executive order Friday restoring the voting rights of 206,000 ex-felons, a sweeping action the governor said was aimed largely at rectifying Virginia’s “long and sad history” of suppressing African-American voting power.
The move, coming in a presidential election year, outraged Republicans who accused McAuliffe of abusing his power to help longtime ally Hillary Clinton win a battleground state by putting more likely Democratic voters on the books.
The governor’s order applies to all violent and nonviolent felons who had finished their sentence and supervised release as of Friday, even those who have not applied for a restoration of rights. Previous Virginia governors have restored rights on an individual basis, but none has done it for an entire category of offenders with one pen stroke.
“We benefit from a more just and accountable government when we put trust in all of our citizens to choose their leaders,” McAuliffe said Friday from the steps of the state Capitol, where a gospel choir warmed up a jubilant crowd. “It has taken Virginia many centuries, unfortunately, to learn this lesson. But today, we celebrate its truth.”
Governor Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat and long time hardline Hillary Clinton supporter, has just added 200,000 potential voters to the rolls who, based on every study I have ever seen on how criminals vote, will massively help the Democrat party.
He has done so without any legislative action, but by executive order. In other words, no one else had any say in the matter.
He has tried to justify this action by couching it in racial terms….and, in the process essentially telling Virginians that convicted felon = Black person — which would cause any Republican who said it to immediately be tagged as a racist jerk.
What Governor McAuliffe has really done, of course, is made it nearly impossible for any Republican to win in Virginia….which, this presidential year, is designed to benefit the political love of his life, Hillary Clinton.
I will be blogging later on today about the apparent joint effort by Republican presidential candidates Ted Cruz and John Kasich to stop Donald Trump, which many are quickly calling a “political dirty trick”. I wonder how many of them will characterize Terry McCauliffe’s action similarly….
….uh, actually I don’t wonder at all. McAuliffe issued his order on Friday. It is now Monday, and other than on a few conservative web sites, I have not seen it anywhere yet.
What a surprise.
