Finally, after a spate of increasingly aggressive attacks on Republicans – mostly women, and let’s not forget Donald Trump’s 12 year old son – we have one Democrat leader speaking up.
From Jordain Carney’s article at thehill.com:
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday said calls for opponents of the Trump administration to publicly harass Cabinet members are “not American,” arguing Democrats should focus their energy on winning elections.
“I strongly disagree with those who advocate harassing folks if they don’t agree with you. … No one should call for the harassment of political opponents. That’s not right. That’s not American,” Schumer said from the Senate floor.
Schumer added that he understands the “frustrations” some members of his party feel when Trump “complains about bullying [and] harassment” even though the president uses it “as a regular tool almost every day.”
“But the president’s tactics and behavior should never be emulated. It should be repudiated by organized, well-informed and passionate advocacy. As Michelle Obama, a person who represents the same kind of fineness that we’ve always had in America … said, ‘When they go low, we go high,’” Schumer said.
OK, let’s try and sort this out.
First off, Senator Schumer is spot-on correct to say harassing people, with increasingly aggressive actions and language, because you do not agree with them politically is wrong, and not American.
Though not said to her by name, that clearly is a direct hit on the pathetic likes of maxine waters. (I wonder if waters has been taken aside, in private, and told to shut the eff up. God knows, she could use the advice.)
Too bad Mr. Schumer didn’t leave it at that.
Instead he felt the need to dissolve what would have been a principled statement, by equating the behavior we have seen over the past week and the mouthings of the Waters’ of the world (she’s not the only Democrat guilty of this, just the loudest) to Donald Trump’s “bullying and harassment”.
Uh….has Donald Trump demanded that Democrats be aggressively prevented from eating at restaurants? Going to movies? Has he advocated setting up shop in front of a Democrat’s house and screaming through megaphones? Has he suggested a Democrat’s pre-teen child should be locked in a cage with pedophiles?
There is a quantum difference between aggressively tweeting opinions and what is being said and done by Democrats/in Democrats’ names. And Chuck Schumer knows this full well.
As far as the “When they go low, we go high” admonishment, who is Mr. Schumer kidding? If what we are seeing this week is high, What’s low? Putting IED’s on Republicans’ driveways?
Democrats had damn well better get serious about condemning these behaviors – not only when they come from pathetic loudmouths like maxine waters, but from “activist” groups acting in Democrats’ names as well .
We’ve already seen one incident where a looney-tune shot up a softball game and almost killed a Republican house member. Does Schumer and his counterparts want this to happen again? Maybe to be more “successful” next time?
Unconditional condemnation is what is needed here. Zero tolerance. Anything else is aiding and abetting.
And that goes double for mainstream media – which, if these were Republican “activists” doing exactly the same thing, would be making it lead-story material for weeks, complete with features on what kind of sub-human creatures those Republicans are.
If something terrible happens, it is as much on them as it is on Democrats.
