Better be sitting down for this one.
Jeff Flake (R-AZ), the fiercely anti-Republican Senator who is not running for re-election this time around – possibly because one poll last year had his approval rating at 18% – says he might challenge Donald Trump in the 2020 primaries.
Yes, he really said that.
From Connor O’Brien’s article at politico.com:
Sen. Jeff Flake said Sunday he hasn’t ruled out a challenge to President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential primaries.
In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Arizona Republican and frequent Trump critic added that, if he did run for president, it would likely be only as a Republican.
Given the significance of Senator Flake’s pronouncement, I feel that, as a matter of disclosure, it should be noted that I, too, have not ruled out a challenge to President Trump in the 2020 presidential primaries.
However, the reason I have not ruled it out is that I have no reason to believe anyone would expect me to run in the first place – a thought which, apparently, has not crossed Jeff Flake’s mind.
Let me end with a heads-up for the soon-to-be-ex-senator: we know that if you challenged President Trump in the primaries it would only be as a Republican. Or did you figure some of us thought you could run in those primaries as a Democrat?
Somehow I doubt Donald Trump is quaking in his undies over a potential challenge by Jeff Flake.
