My conditional congratulations to Senator Joe Manchin (D-WA).
Why is he being congratulated? Because he met with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, presumably to get a first-hand idea of what Judge Kavanaugh is and what he stands for.
Under normal circumstances, no congratulations would be necessary. OF COURSE a U.S. Senator would meet with a prospective Supreme Court nominee.
But this is today’s Democrat Party we are talking about. And in the month and a half since Kavanaugh’s nomination, Joe Manchin is, to the best of my knowledge, the one and only Democrat Senator who has bothered to do so.
And, even here, it may be that Manchin’s meeting with Kavanaugh was to “prove” that he has not lurched as far left as his party has, so that he retains a chance of winning re-election in West Virginia, which Donald Trump easily won in 2016 (which is why my congratulations are conditional).
Of course there is no need to meet with a candidate if you don’t intend to vote for him no matter what he says to you at a meeting. And that, of course, is the reason almost no Democrats will meet with Manchin.
And, if mainstream media are being counted on to tell the public aboutDemocrats’ “we don’t give a damn what he says” stand, there has been no price to pay so far, since they have done virtually no reporting about it (what a surprise).
But, since 10 Democrat incumbents are running for re-election on states won by Donald Trump in 2016, I have a feeling their Republican opponents just might make voters aware of the Kavanaugh shut-out.
