It is being widely reported that William Barr, who served as Attorney General under George H.W. Bush, is a front-runner to succeed Jeff Sessions as Attorney General under President Trump.
I hope so. Because I doubt he could make a better choice.
Barr – certainly a Republican partisan – is also a highly accomplished, highly ethical man, who, from what I’ve read, is respected on both sides of the political aisle.
And his statements about the mueller investigation make it clear he’s not going to try and summarily shut it down (which, apart from whether this absurd witch hunt should be shut down, would create an excrement-hemmorhage among Democrats, media, and even some Republicans).
For those reasons, it seems unlikely that confirmation would be any issue at all (though, given what Democrats tried to pull with Brett Kavanaugh, you never can be sure).
If the reports are true, and Barr is Trump’s guy, I urge the president to get moving and get him in there; the sooner the better.
UPDATE:. Well, that didn’t take long.
This morning, President Trump has announced his nomination of William Barr to be our Attorney General.
Would it be asking too much for the nomination of Mr. Barr, arguably the single most uncontroversial pick Trump could have made, to go through quickly and smoothly?
