Following is a twitter exchange between Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Speaker of the House, and Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA).
First we have Ms. Pelosi’s tweet, sent after Ms. Ernst declined to answer a loaded question about Donald Trump CNN:
Republicans are now refusing to answer the simplest question: whether it’s acceptable for a president to pressure foreign countries to undermine our elections.
American elections should be decided by Americans, not by “favors” from foreign governments.https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2019/10/08/joni-ernst-trump-question-foreign-interference-sot-kaye-ac360-vpx.cnn …
And then we have Ms. Ernst’s response:
Actually, American elections should be decided by ELECTIONS. Not politicians. I know you’re still upset about the results from 2016, but people here in Iowa would sure appreciate it if you spent less time playing political games and actually brought #USMCA now up for a vote. https://twitter.com/speakerpelosi/status/1182282711953809408 …
What’s your reaction to this exchange?
In considering it, please remember what the USMCA is. It is the revised, revamped NAFTA agreement, which is now called the United States Mexico Canada agreement.
And how long has it been ruminating in the Democrat controlled house?
Almost a year.
That’s right, almost a year. That is not a typo. It was signed by President Trump, Mexican President Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau on November 30, 2018.
Democrats have spent the last year sitting on this necessary, beneficial, agreed-to deal, that is far superior to NAFTA, for one reason: because to allow it to go through would give President Trump a major victory. And since the sad reality is that it is not in Democrats’ interests for President Trump to have any victories at all, let alone a major one…the country suffers.
Now: does that affect your reaction to the Pelosi/Ernst exchange?
I’m betting it does. And I’m also hoping it does. Because it should.
