When I was younger, I revered the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).  I was a member, and a yearly contributor.

As the organization radicalized, my esteem waned.  My association – membership and monetary – ended when Ben Chavis was elected its National Director.

These days, I don’t hear much news about the NAACP other than its yearly “Essence Awards”.

And this – pulled from Hannah Yasharoff’s article for USA Today, is what I am hearing about that:

Just days after the prosecutors dropped all charges against Jussie Smollett, who had been indicted on 16 counts of disorderly conduct, the “Empire” actor could again make headlines.

Smollett is nominated for the 2019 NAACP Image Awards, scheduled for Saturday. Six-time host and “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson told Variety on Wednesday that he hopes to see the controversial actor there.

“I hope he wins,” Anderson added. “I’m happy for him that the system worked for him in his favor because the system isn’t always fair, especially for people of color. So I’m glad it worked out for him.”

Anthony Anderson is glad a Chicago-style fix “worked” for jussie smollett?  That’s just great.

How, I wonder, does Anderson feel about the fact that everyone – including Chicago Superintendent of Police Eddie Johnson – just as Black a smollett is – knows full well he is guilty and has gone public to say so?

How, I wonder, does he feel about the asterisk it is going to put on every real racist and/or homophobic attack that occurs in the future?  What will he say when the next legitimate victim of racism has to “prove” he isn’t just another smollett?

If jussie smollett wins an “image award” for staging a phony racial/anti-gay attack and getting away with it, how will it say about the organization handing him the award?  About the attendees applauding him for getting a free pass for his obvious hoax?

Will they give the two Nigerian nationals who smollett paid to stage the hoax a special Lifetime Achievement award too?

Maybe they can make Subway the official sandwich shop of the organization, since its tuna fish sandwich is so good that smollett held on to it instead of fighting off his “attackers”.

This entire episode makes me sick.

That is the only good thing to come out of all this.
Just because someone White does something to someone Black doesn’t make it a hate crime.
All crime should be punished hate crimes like hate speech is not a real thing.
